After a whirlwind romance that lasted just longer than a breath, Hannah weds Owen and moves into the life he has built for himself and his daughter in Sausalito. A year later and Hannah is still struggling to get close with Bailey, Owen's sixteen year old daughter. Then Owen disappears leaving behind a duffle of cash, and a note saying "protect her", that leads the two ladies in his life in search of answers.
This is one of those books that has a bounce around timeline i'm not too fond of. While the story is easy to follow as to what is happening in the current time, the odds and ends of the past don't bring much clarification until just about the end. Even then, some of them just don't fit. They are more there to show the type of relationship that Hannah and Owen had. The way Owen is viewed through Hannah's eyes makes it impossible to dislike him or to believe that he left his family of his own free will.
"The could've-been-boys still love you." - Owen Michaels
While the book jacket would lead one to believe this book is about the disappearance of Owen, it is actually about something much greater. It's about the love of a parent for their child, blood or not, and the lengths they are willing to go to to keep them safe. I didn't like this book because it fell very short from what I was expecting based on the synopsis, but I did enjoy the growth in Hannah herself and her relationship with Bailey.
I wouldn't recommend picking this up this book if you're looking for a mystery, or a thriller. It doesn't have surprising twists and turns. If you are reaching for this book hoping it is the former, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a book about how two women find a way to connect with each other against all odds, then this is the book for you. If you are wanting a book that is a multi generational tale filled with love, loss and longing, this is the book for you.
