House of Hollow - Krystal Sutherland

Iris, is your normal/every day high schooler. Except she has a secret the whole world knows, and one not even she does. Years ago Iris and her two sisters disappeared for a month and when they returned, they had changed. No matter how much she has tried, Iris remembers nothing from the time she was gone, or even before it. It's as if she was born the day she returned. When Grey, her sister, disappears, Iris and here sister Vivi go searching for their missing sister, and memories.

I just want to put a disclaimer that this book touches on some pretty heavy stuff; mental illness, suicide, filicide, I will not go into any of the heavy here in my review but wanted everyone to be aware should you decide to pick up your own copy.

From the first words of the prologue Krystal Sutherland pulls you into the magical, mystical story of three missing girls that returned changed. If you've ever read any fairy tales, you may quickly begin to make assumptions about the girls. Don't. This book has more twists and turns than a roller coaster!

If you have an over active imagination like me (make monsters out of clothes in the closet when it's dark, ghost stories make you jump at the slightest noise), I don't suggest starting this and putting it down right before bed. It's best to finish it before trying to sleep. I read this book in two sittings, but only because I needed to sleep otherwise I would have whizzed through it in a few hours.

House of Hollow is reminiscent of an original Grimms fairy tale, deeply disturbing while being enticingly magical. I recommend this book for anyone 14+ who enjoys a little bit of horror and a lot a bit of magic. Those who have difficulty with discussions of mental health and suicide should probably avoid this book.

"Dark, dangerous things happened around the Hollow sisters."
